CATARACT PREVENTION

CATARACT PREVENTION

22/05/2020

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cataract is a leading cause of blindness. More seriously, the disease is on the rise among young adults due to living environment, unhealthy lifestyle and eye care habits.

What should you do to prevent cataracts? Some strategies may be helpful, including:

  • Protect your eyes from the sun. UVA and UVB rays are harmful to your eyes. Wear sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats whenever you leave home. Limit the amount of time you're in the sun, especially in the period from 11:00am to 3:00pm when the sun's rays are the most intense.
  • Protect your eyes when using a computer or watching TV. Position your screen 40 cm from your eyes. Even though studies have not proved the connection between usage of electronic devices and cataracts, it is recommended to minimize your screen usage. Pay attention to the distance and the length of time you spend in front of screens. Apply the 20-20-20 rule. Relax your eyes every 20 minutes by looking at something 20 feet away (equivalent to 6m) in 20 seconds. You can close or massage your eyes for better blood circulation.
  • Have regular eye examinations, once in 2 years if you age 18 to 60 and have no risk factors. If you are over 60 and have no risk factors, have a yearly examination. If you are over 60 and have risk factors, more than one examination is recommended every year.
  • Reduce smoking and drinking.
  • Choose a healthy diet that is good for your eyes.
  • Eat more dark green vegetables which are high in antioxidants (kale, spinach, cabbage…).
  • Get more vitamin C by eating vegetables and fruits (such as cantaloupe, broccoli, grapes, pumpkin, guava, pepper, orange, strawberries).
  • Increase vitamin E intake by eating colourful vegetables and fruits (such as spinach, almonds, sunflower seeds, peanuts, butter, mango). Vitamin E can protect your eyes from UV rays.
  • Exercise regularly.
