CERVICAL DISC HERNIATION: AN UNDERLYING CONDITION AMONG WHITE-COLLAR WORKERS

CERVICAL DISC HERNIATION: AN UNDERLYING CONDITION AMONG WHITE-COLLAR WORKERS

18/01/2022

Often having to sit for hours, office workers face the risk of spine as well as intervertebral discs under great pressure for a long time, leading to cervical disc herniation.

This is the condition in which the outer fibrous capsule of the disc is torn, causing the nucleus pulposus to escape, compressing the nerve roots, spinal cord leading to joint pain. It is also noticed by doctors that among 7 cervical vertebrae, hernia occurs mainly in 3 vertebrae C4 C5 and C6. This is one of the diseases of the joints and bones that often cause a person extremely painful and unpleasant sensations.

► Objective, subjective causes can cause cervical disc herniation such as:

  • Due to work and daily habits: the patient’s got wrong posture when working, sitting for a long time will significantly affect the spine and increase the risk of disc herniation. In particular, in daily activities, habits such as sitting crooked to the side, lying while watching TV or sleeping at desk... are also the causes of cervical disc herniation.
  • Due to age: the older the age, the greater the risk of cervical disc herniation. Between the ages of 30 and 50, each person's bones begin to show signs of degeneration. In addition, in the elderly, the elasticity and water content of the body will be reduced over time, so it is very easy to get diseases of the joints and bones.
  • Due to an injury or accident: these injuries have a strong impact on the spine causing the mucus in the intervertebral disc to escape and cause compression.
  • Genetic factors: In a family where there are relatives affected by bone and joint diseases or disc herniation, the children also have the potential to inherit the condition of cervical disc herniation.

► Some common signs and symptoms of cervical disc herniation include:

  • Pain and ache: This is the most obvious sign of cervical disc herniation; the nerve is compressed due to fluid escaping from the bursa. The pain often appears suddenly in the neck area and spreads to other parts of the body such as the head, arms, shoulder blades and causes neck-shoulder-arm syndrome.
  • Numbness in some areas of the body: Depending on the compressed nerve, the area of numbness may be different. If the disc escapes from its original position and puts pressure on the nerve, the patient may experience numbness and paresthesia in the arm, hand and may spread to the fingers, along the path of the nerve. If the spinal cord is compressed, the numbness will spread to the extremities.
  • Weakness in limbs: The more severe the cervical disc herniation, the weaker the limb muscles will be, usually occur only when the nucleus pulposus presses on the spinal cord. Normally, the leg muscles will be weak at first, affecting the ability to move. During exertional activity, the thighs and calves often vibrate, not well controlled. Then the hand muscles will be affected, the ability to grasp will also decrease.
  • Restricted range of motion: The neck area not only experiences pain but also becomes stiffer, with reduced flexibility in movement. Difficult movements such as bending, tilting the head back, or reaching the arms behind the back become challenging to perform. If attempted, the patient may experience increased pain or extreme discomfort due to muscle stiffness.

Dr. Truong Huu Bao - Orthopedist shared: "cervical disc herniation does not directly cause life-threatening. However, the condition can lead to complications such as neurological disorders, spinal cord compression, insufficient blood supply to the brain, paralysis. Therefore, as soon as the signs of cervical disc herniation mentioned above are noticed, patients should seek early medical attention to receive timely treatment. Depending on the specific condition, doctors will prescribe appropriate treatment regime to achieve optimal results.”

At the American International Hospital (AIH), Trauma & Orthopedics specialty, during the consultation and treatment process, doctors will apply the latest methods, techniques, and treatment regimens according to American standards. Most importantly, the orthopedist collaborates with the physiotherapy – rehabilitation specialist to plan the treatment and order individual exercises for each patient based on the assessment of patient through various factors such as the severity of the condition, occupation, sports habits, other medical conditions, and appropriate training duration for the patient.

The patient is also supported in pain management through various methods, modern apparatus, and an ideal environment for treatment at the American International Hospital (AIH) for patients to participate in exercises, shorten the recovery time, and return to normal mobility.
