CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE (COPD) PREVENTION

20/02/2023

COPD is typically referred to airflow limitation caused by aspiration pneumonia as inhaling  hazardous gases which usually is cigarette smoke… In addition, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is the most obvious genetic pathogen, a major cause of emphysema in non-smokers and obviously increased in smokers.

► COPD symptoms:

Patients are diagnosed with COPD when having the following symptoms:

  • Chesty cough and dyspnea progressed in years ; the common signs include diminished vesicular sounds, prolonged expiratory breathing and wheeze.
  • Dyspnea can be progressive, persistent, exacerbated on exertion or suffering from respiratory tract infection in patients aged 50s or 60s.
  • Symptoms progress rapidly in patients who are continued to smoking or longer exposure to tobacco smoke. Morning hedache develops in exacerbated conditions and signs hypercapnia or nocturnal hypoxia.
  • Posible complications of severe cases include weight loss, pneumothorax, regular exacerbations of decompensation, right heart failure and/or acute or chronic respiratory distress.

Diagnostic methods will be based on medical history, clinical exam, chest X-ray and spirometry.

► Prevention of COPD recurrence:

  • In order to prevent COPD recurrence, patients are advised to quit smoking, minimize contact to gases, chemicals, toxic fumes, dust.
  • Keep your throat and mouth clean to avoid respiratory  tract diseases. If you have a history of chronic bronchitis, radical examination and treatment are required.
  • Avoid sudden cold (avoid cold shower, do not blow fan directly on you, when sleeping in an air-conditioned room, the temperature should be about 26-27 Celsius degrees).
  • COPD patients should remain physical exercises such as cycling , walking.... in moderate intensity, about 30-60 minutes per day depending on individual ability.
  • In addition to physical activities, COPD patients need to have a healthy diet with diluted, hot and  easily digestible foods. Maintain adequate nutrition and supplement juice , fruits and vegetables.

The first and foremost treatment for COPD is smoking cessation. Medication administration helps to relieve COPD symptoms and prevent the onset of symptoms (exacerbations) but this can lead to further loss of pulmonary function. Patients with COPD should adhere to their doctor’s prescription.

When the disease recurs or exacerbates, immediate medical examination is recommended. Because chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a significant risk factor for developing lung cancer. In addition, if you have a cough  lasting longer than 1 month or regular dyspnea, doctor‘s visit is required for timely detection and effective treatment before the disease gets deterioration.
