For many parents, baby feeding is considered as a "battle" because the child is irritated and uncooperative. This situation makes parents worry and try many different methods to improve but not effective. Let's find out more about anorexia in babies with AIH and refer to the method of building nutrition pattern for anorexic babies!

Anorexia is a phenomenon that children eat less than usual, eat selective foods, eat certain foods only, refuse or vomit when seeing foods, skip meals caused by many reasons.

► Some reasons of  anorexia in infants

  • Children have some health problems: Anorexia is a common symptom for all sick children. If your child is suddenly not eating and irritated while having normal eating as usual, parents should increase observation on the child's health condition. When children suffer some health problems such as fever, teething, sore throat, helminth infection, etc., they may feel discomfort and loss of appetite.
  • Infants have nutritional problems: Anorexia can be related to nutritional deficiency, especially the lack of protein, lysine, zinc, potassium; Processed foods are not suitable for children's taste; Children have not been adapted to a new diet or forced for overeat, leading to cibophobia. Micronutrients play an important role in increasing nutritional digestion and absorption. Thus, children with long-term micronutrient deficiency usually have stunt and anorexia.
  • Children are in a period of physiological changes: In the process of development, parents occasionally see their children grow up too quick, but sometimes it seems to slow down. This is a temporary cause only. After a period of getting familiarity and stabilizing the body, children’s eating will return to normal. Parents need to pay more attention and be patient with their children.

► A few tips on nutrition for anorexic children

  • For neonates: Mothers can give breastfeeding more often if the feeding time is less than usual, and mothers can express or suction and store breast milk to use several times a day.
  • For children:
    • Provide foods that suitable with children's chewing and swallowing ability, diverse, easily digestible and divided into small meals.
    • It is necessary to change the foods and give the foods that children prefer to encourage their consumption and appetite stimulation.
    • Need to create a comfortable and happy feeling as eating, this will help children interest and look forward to the meals.

► Additionally, parents need

  1. Develop a diverse, balanced diet

  • Protein supplement: lean meat, fish, seafood, eggs, milk, yogurt, cheese, tofu and beans...
  • Starch supplement: rice, vermicelli, noodles,  whole grain products (brown rice, brown bread) for ≥ 1- year old babies.
  • Fiber supplement: fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, ...
  • Good fat supplement: olive oil, sunflower oil, avocado, ...
  • Supplement vitamins and minerals: vegetables, fruits.

  1. Do not force your baby to eat and divide the meal into smaller parts

Eating too much will make your baby get fed up, leading to anorexia or slow weight gain. Instead of forcing, scolding your baby to eat, parents should change cooking method and diversify their dishes. Especially, divide into 3 main meals and 3 snacks, 2-3 hours apart to ensure that the baby's stomach digests all the food, simultaneously create sufficient time to make your baby hungry and excited to the next meal.

  1. Supplement of milk and diary products

Milk is a nutritious and easily digestible food, not only a source of protein but also a calcium supplement for strong and healthy bone growth in babies. For underweight babies, parents should prioritize milk containing high-quality protein and probiotic yogurt to help them absorb nutrients better.

► Simultaneosly, parents should pay attention to the following issues:

  • Do not increase the number of meals for children even though they eat very little each meal only or skips meals.
  • Do not cook food thinner than usual (add less protein and fat than usual) causes children who have eaten less in quantity are more disadvantaged in terms of quality.
  • Limit saturated fat intake such as animal fat, viscera, etc.

Individual child's eating habits and favourites are different, so diet and exercise patterns to be individualized for individual child, not a general  menu or diet applied to all.
