GASTRITIS: CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS YOU SHOULDN’T NEGLECT

26/08/2020

A lot of patients suffering from gastritis overlook its symptoms and do not request for early consultation and treatment from doctors. This may result in serious and even life-threatening complications.

1. What is gastritis?

  • Gastritis is the inflammation, irritation, or erosion of the stomach lining.
  • Acute gastritis is a severe and sudden inflammation in the lining of stomach. It is characterized by erosion (mucosal defenses are damaged) and non-erosion.
  • Chronic gastritis occurs gradually over a long period of time, can last for years if left untreated, and is classified by histopathology.
Erosive gastritis is a less common form that does not cause much inflammation but can lead to bleeding and gastric mucosal ulceration. In addition, although there are some classification systems being recommended, none of them are widely accepted.

2. What causes gastritis?

Weaknesses in the mucus-lined barrier that protects the stomach wall allows digestive acids to damage and inflame the stomach lining. A number of diseases and conditions can increase your risk of gastritis.

3. Signs and symptoms of gastritis

  • Abdominal pain or indigestion.
  • Abdominal bloating.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Nausea or vomiting. Vomiting blood or coffee ground-like material. Black, tarry stools.
  • Acute gastritis may be accompanied by hiccups.

4. What are the risk factors?

Although infection with Helicobacter pylori is among the most common worldwide human infections, only some people with the infection develop gastritis. Left untreated, gastritis may lead to stomach ulcers and stomach cancer.

Patients need to receive early consultation and accurate diagnosis for better treatment, avoiding unfortunate consequences.

At American International Hospital (AIH), gastroscopy is performed to diagnose gastritis, each gastroscopy lasts 10 to 15 minutes (while normal endoscopy lasts around 3 to 5 minutes). The endoscopy aims at evaluating carefully the lesions, screening for highly risky lesions that may lead to cancer.

Especially, at AIH all the tools used in an endoscopy are strictly sterilized by automatic machines following American standards in 45 minutes before being used for patients.
