GIVE ORAL FUNCTIONAL FOODS TO CHILDREN: CAUTION FOR PARENTS

17/02/2023

With a desire to create the best condition for the child’s healthy growth, smart, many parents nowadays feed their children with functional foods. However, functional foods only take effects with proper use, and improper use can cause undesirable side effects, which negatively affect the health of child.

Before giving children functional foods, parents need to understand that:

  • Only really necessary cases (undernutrition, malabsorption, chronic diseases,…) require functional food supplement according to doctor's prescription.
  • Functional foods are foods that contain some micronutrients, vitamins,… cannot replace daily meals and do not have therapeutic effect.
  • The use of multivitamin can result in the risk of excessive substances in children such as excessive iron, zinc, vitamins A, C,…

According To MMed. 2nd degree specialist Pham Cong Luan, Head of Pediatrics - Neonatology, American International Hospital (AIH), vitamins are crucial micronutrients for the health of both adults and children. However, the addition of vitamins and functional foods to children must be consulted, prescribed from a doctor basing on the health condition of each child. If parents notice that the child is slowly grown, it is recommended to take him/her to the hospital for proper health condition assessment, from which there will be appropriate additional indications. Parents absolutely do not buy and use functional foods on their own because lack or excess of micronutrients is not good for children's health.

Pediatrics – Neonatology at AIH provides full of pediatric medical services, including general health check-up, vaccination, monitoring children’s physical and mental health developments, nutrition consultation, diagnostic and therapeutic services.

Outpatient pediatrics at AIH is divided into two separate areas: one for athletic children and another for sick kids in the purpose of patient classification to avoid cross-contamination.  When children arrive hospital with suspicious symptoms, they will be transferred to a separate consulting area, thereby screening and isolation procedures are applied initially.
