Liver is considered as a "toxin treatment plant" of the human body which is responsible for more than 500 different functions, especially the process of purification and detoxification, keeping your body healthy. In Vietnam, liver cancer is the most common cancer, in 2020 alone, the number of new cases with liver cancer is 26,418 cases, with 25,272 deaths from liver cancer.

The best way to fight liver disease is prevention if possible. Below are some ways to keep your liver healthy!

► Maintain a healthy weight

Maintain the Body Mass Index (BMI) from 18 to 25 by proper diet and regular exercise. In case of obesity or even mildly overweight, you are at risk of hepatic steatosis which may result in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Regular exercise: hepls maintain an ideal BMI, burn off “ bad fat” (triglyceride) to generate energy and decrease hepatic steatosis condition.

► Balanced diet

Apply a rainbow diet which means fruits and vegetables from all colors of the rainbow, helps ensure you have all the necessary nutrients and fibers. Avoid refined sugars like donuts and white breads instead of whole grains, breads and cereals. A little consumption of meat, milk and fat is also helpful, but not excessive, using "good" fats (monounsaturated, polyunsaturated) from seeds, nuts, fish, and vegetable oils. It is necessary to drink plenty of water for staying hydrated throughout the day.

► Responsible drinking of alcoholic beverages

Alcoholic beverages can cause many health problems. They can destroy liver cells and cause liver cirrhosis. You may be advised to drink alcohol moderately or to quit altogether.

► Check your own supplements/medicines
The role of the liver is to purify all the drugs taken into the body. Most of drugs are safe for the liver when they are taken under doctor’s instruction. However, failure to comply with prescription including supplements can be harmful to the body and the liver. Some common drugs that can cause liver toxicity include pain relievers, antipyretics containing acetaminophen, statins for hyperlipidemia and some antibiotics such as amoxicillin, clindamycin, erythromycin...

► Toxin avoidance
Toxins can damage liver cells. Limit direct exposure to toxins from detergents, volatile chemicals, and insecticides. When the sprayer is used, make sure the room is well ventilated and a mask is worn. Do not smoke.

► Safe sexual intercourse
Sexual intercourse is taken unsafely or with many sexual partners increases the risk of Hepatitis B, C infections.

► Handwash
It's a simple, easy way to prevent pathogens including the hepatitis A virus. All it takes is a little soap and warm water. It is worth noting that handwashing must be done immediately before food preparation and after diaper change or toilet visit.

Take precautions from needles, sharp objects and exposure to the blood.

If you or someone you have known that used to inject addictive drugs, it's necessary to have testing for hepatitis C and blood transmitted diseases. This is true also if you are accidentally stabbed by a needle. A blood test can tell you whether you've ever been infected with the hepatitis C virus. Additionally, only use clean needles for body tattoos and piercings.

Do not share toiletries such as shavers, toothbrushes, and nail clippers because they can carry small amounts of blood or body fluids from people infected with hepatitis B and C.

If you have contacted with someone else's blood for any reason, immediate doctor visit is advised. If you are very worried, go to the emergency room at the nearest hospital.

► Vaccination

You can be infected with hepatitis A and hepatitis B if you haven't been vaccinated. Talk to your doctor about vaccination requirement as this can be especially important if your immune system is weaken  or your liver already has some lesions.

► Liver lesion screening
