PERIODONTITIS - BE AWARE OF POTENTIAL DANGER

According to the National Hospital of Odonto - Stomatology, there are more than 80% of adults have dental diseases and most cases are periodontitis. 
 
Periodontitis not only is a common dental disease among adults  but also consider as one of the causes of permanent  tooth loss. 
 
Normally, periodontitis is easily ignored by patients due to its  latent progress. They  usually detect this condition when  it becomes severe. 
 
Therefore, it is necessary to know about  periodontitis to have  prompt prevention and treatment. 
 
What is periodontitis?
 
Periodontitis is a serious gum infection that damages the soft tissue and deystroys the bone supporting  your teeth. 
 
In addition of severe pain and halitosis, periodontitis can cause loose teeth,  reduced chewing function or tooth loss. 
 
Moreover, periodontitis can lead to diseases regarding cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal,...systems or other serious health problems.
 
Causes of periodontitis
 
  • Tartar is not regularly removed, which causes inflamed gums  and gradually progress to periodontitis.
  • Poor dental hygiene, especially after eating. 
  • Smoking
  • Hormonal  disorders ( commonly found in pregnant women or puberty)
  • Weakened  immune system
  • Spaces between teeth due to frequent use of toothpicks with big and sharp tips. 
  • Certain diseases such as diabetes,  white blood cell disorders, bacterial infections, toxins …

Common symptoms 
 
  • Swollen, painful, red gums 
  • Dental roots are prone to be bled bleed when brushing, flossing given or  any impact on the teeth and gums
  • Dental plaques and tartar develop on the surface of teeth, especially the neck of tooth 
  • Bad breath Halitosis
  • Fluid or pus discharged when gingival palpation given. 
  • The tooth is loosen, displaced and difficulty chewing
 
Prevention 
 
Although periodontitis is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults, it is preventable if the following tips are strictly complied:
  • Regular dental hygiene 
  • Use a soft toothbrush and change it every 3-4 months
  • Brush your teeth twice a day or more after  meals or snacks. 
  • Use mouthwash to remove dental plaques 
  • Use the dental floss, interdental brush to clean the gaps between teeth
  • Remove tartar regularly
  • Consultation with your dentist every 6 months
