⁉️ What is considered precocious puberty?

Signs of puberty starting before age 8 in girls and before age 9 in boys are considered precocious puberty. This includes:

• Breast development and the onset of menstrual period in girls
• Testicles, penis and facial hair growing, deeper voice in boys
• Body hair development
• Rapid height development
• Acne or body odor, etc.

When children have one of the above symptoms, parents should seek immediate medical support from a pediatrician or endocrinologist.

How does precocious puberty affect children?

Height: Initially, the child with precocious puberty can grow taller faster than their peers; however, as the bone develops quicker than normal, the child can lose 6-7cm in height compared to the genetic potential.

• Mental state: Going through precocious puberty, the child can feel different from his/her peers, which can lead to insecurities, shame, pressure, and hypersensitivity. It can even cause low self-esteem and depression.
• Precocious puberty resulting in premature sexual desire: Early pubertal psychology development can cause premature physiological sexual desires and actions. However, as they are still young and not mentally mature, they are more vulnerable to exploitation.
• Substance abuse: Children entering puberty too early are more likely to become victims of drug or other stimulants use.
