09/01/2023

Pneumonia is a disease of lung inflammation or infection, commonly seen in the patients with high risk factors such as: a weak immune system, polluted habitat, smoking and frequent drug use. The elderlies and children are pneumonia victims because of a weak immune system.

This disease can be classified in different ways, but in the article below, American International Hospital (AIH) will give you 4 common types of pneumonia so that you can have prompt prevention and health check!

Pneumonia is respiratory tract infections under influence of  a certain factor. After attacking the body, the pathogens will damage the air sacs (alveoli) and lung parenchyma, leading to fluid retention. Fluids and decomposition products of the inflammatory response will block the alveoli. This interferes oxygen exchange from the alveoli, the body does not have enough oxygen for normal activities.

► Common types of pneumonia consist of:

  • Viral pneumonia: can be transmitted through air droplets of fluid after someone sneezes or coughs. The symptoms include dry cough, fever, dyspnea and possible chest pain when breathing. SARS-CoV-2 is the most dangerous virus in viral pneumonia.
  • Bacterial pneumonia: is found in the lung and caused by bacteria, in which Streptococcus is the most common. It normally occurs in people aged 65 years over, with asthma or heart disease. Similarly to viral pneumonia, bacterial pneumonia has the following symptoms: high fever, cough with green or yellow sputum, and chills.
  • Mycoplasma pneumonia: this is a less severe pneumonia with the symptoms of: sore throat, headache, fatigue, and is often mistaken with common cold or flu.
  • Fungal pneumonia: this disease is caused by fungal spores which penetrate into the lungs and multiply, commonly occur in individuals with immunodeficiency.

► Some precautions of pneumonia included:

  • Regular and careful hand washing
  • Plenty of fluid and proper diet
  • Comply with healthy sleep habits to keep immune system in balance
  • Quit smoking
  • Flu and pneumococcal vaccinations
