WHAT FACTORS DETERMINE A CHILD 'S HEIGHT?

WHAT FACTORS DETERMINE A CHILD 'S HEIGHT?

20/06/2024

Newborns and young children undergo continuous changes in bone structure. In addition to the fixed and unchangeable genetic factors, let’s explore with the American International Hospital (AIH) the factors that determine a child’s height as they grow into adulthood.

  • Nutrition: A balanced diet helps children get enough energy, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals to maximize their growth potential, ensure physical health and synchronous development of organs, and enhance children’s resistance.
  • Sleep: Sleeping late and waking up early can adversely affect a child's height growth and intellectual development. The body releases the highest amount of growth hormone at two specific times: from 9 PM to 2 AM and from 5 AM to 7 AM, with levels being 5 to 7 times higher than during the day. Therefore, parents should ensure that children go to bed before 9 PM and wake up after 7 AM.
  • Physical activity: Physical activity helps stimulate the body to produce strong growth hormone (GH). Children need to engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. Parents can divide the 60 minutes of activity into several fun play sessions. Participating in sports helps children increase bone density, muscle mass and optimal height growth.
  • Medical condition: Overweight and obese children are often taller than their age, but when they reach puberty, their height stops growing and they tend to be shorter than their peers due to the excess fat accumulated earlier, which adversely affects their growth process. Congenital abnormalities such as osteochondral dysplasia syndrome or Turner disease also impact the height growth of children.
  • Hormones:
- HGH (Human Growth Hormone): Produced in the pituitary gland. This is the most important hormone that helps children increase their height. Children with congenital genetic diseases that cause growth hormone deficiency will have a slower growth rate and shorter height compared to healthy children of the same age.
- Sex hormones: These are very important hormones for the development of sex and reproductive organs in children. Males who lack Testosterone and females who lack Estrogen may experience delayed puberty, which can result in shorter stature and slower growth.
- Thyroid hormones: These include T3, T4 hormones that regulate the metabolism of protein, carbohydrates, and fats from food. In addition, thyroid follicular cells also secrete calcitonin hormone, which is released in response to increased and decreased calcium levels in the blood, supporting the process of increasing mineral density in bones and promoting height growth.

The package "Screening for children's height development" at American International Hospital (AIH) is designed to include a full range of examinations, tests, and imaging tests performed by a team of experienced doctors and experts, helping parents obtain information, provide solutions, and timely interventions. As a result, children can achieve optimal height development within their genetic potential, enhancing their physical condition and quality of life.

The Department of Pediatrics – Neonatology, American International Hospital AIH provides a full range of pediatric medical examination and treatment services, including: General health check-up; vaccination; monitoring the physical and mental development of children; nutrition consult; and diagnostic and treatment services.

The pediatric examination area at AIH is divided into two distinct zones: one for healthy children and another for sick children, with the aim of streamlining patient flow to prevent cross-infection. When a child arrives at the hospital showing symptoms that may indicate illness, they will be taken to a separate examination area, allowing for the selection and isolation of diseases right from the start.
