4 WAYS TO HELP PARENTS PREVENT CHICKENPOX IN CHILDREN

4 WAYS TO HELP PARENTS PREVENT CHICKENPOX IN CHILDREN

23/12/2022

Caused by the Varicella Zoster virus, chickenpox can spread super easily from person to person, especially through the respiratory route, direct contact, nasal and throat secretions, or fluid from the chickenpox blisters. Without careful prevention, your children could face a high risk of catching the disease and endure 7-10 days of fatigue, headache, mild fever, runny nose, and red rash all over their body.

► Chickenpox symptoms are split into 2 stages:

  • The initial stage: Similar to other viral infections, kids may experience symptoms such as fever and headache, but chickenpox in children often lacks any warning signs of the illness.
  • The outbreak stage: Kids develop small, round "grain-like" bumps on their skin within 12 - 24 hours, which then evolve into blisters or vesicles.

If not properly managed and treated, chickenpox can lead to serious complications like skin infections, sepsis, bone/joint infections, and even pneumonia or encephalitis…

► To proactively protect your children from the risk of chickenpox, parents should keep in mind these 4 following strategies:

  • Limit exposure to crowded places and absolutely avoid contact with anyone who infected.
  • Maintain regular personal hygiene, especially cleaning hands and throat to keep germs at bay, preventing the Varicella Zoster virus from settling in and causing illness.
  • Clean your living space and personal items to minimize the risk of illness through contact or secretions, and encourage your children to use their own belongings to avoid contact with others.
  • Vaccinate children against chickenpox starting at 12 months old at healthcare facilities.

Here are some key measures parents should remember to protect their kids from chickenpox. Moreover, if you suspect your child has the disease based on clear symptoms, quickly take them to the American International Hospital (AIH) for leading experts and doctors to examine and treat them effectively and swiftly.

The Pediatrics and Neonatology Department at the American International Hospital AIH offers a full range of pediatric healthcare services, including general health check-ups, vaccinations, monitoring physical and mental development, nutritional advice, as well as diagnostic and treatment services for illnesses.

The pediatric outpatient area at AIH is divided into 2 separate areas: an area for healthy children and an area for children with illness, with the purpose of separating patients to avoid cross-infection. When a child comes to the hospital with symptoms suspected of having the disease, he or she will be taken to a separate examination area, so the disease can be triaged and isolated from the beginning.
