FATIGUE CAUSED BY MIGRAINE AND WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

21/12/2020

Everyone is at risk of migraine. The disease affects 1 in every 5 women and 1 in every 15 men. In most of the cases, patients are at the age of 10 to 40.

A migraine refers to the condition of throbbing pain on one side of the head which can last for hours to days. The pain can be irritating, affect your working performance and interfere with your daily activities. To reduce the likelihood of getting the disease and risk factors, let’s find out about the disease’s symptoms and signs for timely treatment.

Migraine’s symptoms

The signs usually start many hours or many days before the pain comes. Some common signs include:

  • Your mood changes suddenly (you feel depressed or irritated)
  • You become sensitive to light and sound (glare or noise)
  • You feel drowsy, tired and yawn a lot.
  • Your taste changes; you experience loss of appetite and nausea
  • You feel thirsty and urination occurs more frequently

Causes of migraine

Causes of migraine are galore, but 60% to 80% of cases are reported to be caused by genes. Some popular causes include:

  • Stress: When you are stressful, your brain releases substances that can affect your blood vessels, which leads to migraine.
  • Foods: Some foods and beverages such as cheese, wine, food additives such as nitrate (in pepperoni, sausages), monosodium glutamate (MSG) and some other kinds of foods and drinks account for up to 30% of migraine patients.
  • Caffeine: Too much caffeine or caffeine withdrawal can cause headaches. Caffeine can be used to treat acute migraine.
  • Weather change
  • Severe fatigue (before or after the period)
  • Change in daily activities (eating and sleeping less)
  • Smoking
  • Flashing light and certain smells

When to see a doctor?

You should see a doctor when you have any of the above symptoms and any of the following factors:

  • Over 50 years of age
  • Sudden migraine
  • Drugs that are commonly used to treat migraine are ineffective
  • Fever and headache, severe vomiting
  • Stiff neck, difficulty in speaking, epilepsy, reduced vision.

Although migraine is a benign headache, it can interfere with your daily activities. To reduce the likelihood of getting the disease or recurrence, adopt a healthy lifestyle, say no to alcohol, smoking, avoid anxiety and stress. In addition, as there is a wide range of drugs for treating migraine, doctors’ prescription and follow-up are necessary.
