GOUT - PROPER UNDERSTANDING FOR BETTER CONTROL
Economic growth improves living standards, which subsequently changes people’s lifestyle; and gout becomes increasingly popular as a result of an unhealthy lifestyle.
You may have heard of gout before but do not know what it is about. Let’s find out its symptoms and guidelines to control it.
Gout is a form of arthritis caused by excess uric acid in the joints. Your body produces uric acid when it breaks down purines which are found in certain foods such as liver, beans, peas and anchovies. Abnormal production of uric acid and formation of urate crystals in joints can cause pain, kidney stones and blocked flow of urine which lead to kidney failure.
Symptoms:
- Sudden and intense joint pain, swollen joints.
- Intense joint pain when being touched
- Joints get swollen and red
- The area surrounding joints gets warm.
- In most of the cases, symptoms of gout last in a couple of hours for 1-2 days. In some severe cases, the pain can last in a few weeks.
Gout can result in dangerous complications. However, patients can get back to their life as healthy as they used to be if their gout is controlled and treated properly.
These below lifestyle guidelines can help protect you against future gout attacks:
- Revisit your doctor as advised
- Follow your doctor’s instructions.
- Do not take medications without your doctor’s prescription.
- Exercise everyday
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Drink plenty of water
- Limit your intake of red meat and seafood.
- Limit your intake of organ meat, especially liver, pilchards and anchovies
- Limit alcohol consumption
- Eat plenty of fiber-rich foods such as cucumbers, cassava roots, tomatoes, etc.
If you have any questions about gout symptoms, seek medical advice.
