Khẩn cấp
HAVING CANCELED THE TREATMENT IN AUSTRALIA, A 73-YEAR-OLD PATIENT OPTED FOR TOTAL LEFT KNEE REPLACEMENT AT AIH
Australian) had suffered from significant pain in his left knee, making walking difficult. He used to have knee gel injection but the pain persisted without improvement. Before this, Mr. R.D. had returned to Australia for consultation and surgery scheduling; however, after considering the treatment plan with Prof. Dr. René D. Esser, he and his family confidently chose AIH as his further healthcare partner.
At AIH, after conducting clinical assessment, X-Ray and MRI, Dr. René concluded that Mr. R.D. had severe osteoarthritis (grade IV) in his left knee. After consultation with the team of surgical specialists, Dr. René suggested a total left knee replacement, which is an appropriate treatment for the patient. The goal is to alleviate persistent pain, improve mobility, enhance joint function, limit complications such as joint stiffness and possibility of permanant disability.
After the operation, patient’s condition stablized and recovered well. A bedside rehabilitation plan was carried out by a physical therapist from the Rehabilitation unit. After a 3-day stay at the hospital, assessment showed a knee flexion range of 90 degrees. At the time of discharge, he was in a good condition, pain-free and able to walk using a walker and crutches.
To schedule an appointment with Prof. Dr. René D. Esser, please book online at https://www.aih.com.vn/bac-sy/esser-rene-daniel-dr or contact our hotline at (028) 3910 9999.

After the treatment in AIH, Mr. R.D. shared: “Previously, we had been choosing AIH as our family’s healthcare partner and were satisfied with the service here. When it came to the total left knee replacement, we considered between treatment option in Austrialia and in Vietnam. However, after meeting and discussing the surgical method with Dr. René, our family felt assured and trusted AIH as the right choice. In the future, we will continue choosing AIH for our family’s health screenings.”
According to Prof. Dr. René D. Esser, osteoarthritis is the deterioration and erosion process of the cartilage and subchondral bone, resulting in changes to joint surfaces, accelerated calcium deposits and formation of bone spur, which may lead to dysarthrosis and joint damages. Total knee replacement is a major surgery that requires expertise and skills from an experienced orthopedic trauma specialist. In the case of Mr. R.D.’s case, who had severe knee osteoarthritis, total knee replacement was considered a highly effective treatment option and able to alleviate the patient’s pain. Artificial knee joints are moderately durable, lasting over 15 years with proper care.
Prof. Dr. René D. Esser previously served as the Head of Orthopedic Trauma Departments at Stanford University (USA), Markgröningen Hospital (Germany), and Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital (Samoa).
