IS IT DANGEROUS IF PREGNANT WOMEN SUFFER FROM URTICARIA AND PRURITUS?

Pregnancy is the period during which a mother has to undergo a lot of changes. Common skin diseases include: rash; stretch; Atopic dermatitis... making many pregnant women feel uncomfortable.
In particular, urticaria and pruritus (also known as Pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy - PUPPP) is a common skin disease in some pregnant women. Therefore, mothers need to find out its causes not only to have an appropriate treatment but also to better protect the health of mothers and babies.
 
 
Urticaria and pruritus during pregnancy
 
Hives and pruritus are considered to be benign rashes with small, red bumps on stretch marks. Accordingly, those red bumps joining together in clusters are seen as hives.
 
 
The causes of urticaria and pruritus during pregnancy
 
●       The body may produce high levels of hormones, especially estrogen;
●       Fetal development sometimes interferes with the body;
●       Exposure to allergens: Insects, dust, pollen, animal hair...;
●       Consume inappropriate foods, such as foods that can easily cause allergies such as seafood, almonds, peanuts…;
●       Other factors: Weak resistance; Genetics of allergic diseases; a family history of skin diseases such as urticaria, rash.
 
The symptoms of Hives and pruritus during pregnancy
 
Common symptoms of pregnancy urticaria and pruritus include:
• Severe itching on the skin of the abdomen;
• Appearance of red bumps on abdomen and limbs;
• Tingling results in a scratching reaction, causing scratching and skin infection;
• Unlike other types of rashes that can appear anywhere on the body, pregnancy hives and pruritus usually begin around the abdomen, especially the umbilical region, then gradually spread to other parts such as thighs, arms and legs.
 
Are Pregnancy Urticaria and pruritus Dangerous?
This usually does not seriously affect the life of both pregnant women and fetus, but will make Mother-to-be often tired, itchy and uncomfortable.
 
However, pregnant mothers should not be heedless, because there are also some cases of urticaria and pruritus that warn many serious diseases such as poor hepatic bile circulation, making pregnant women at risk of preterm labor and postpartum anemia.
 
Besides, genital urticaria can cause infection inside the uterus through the placenta, causing birth defects in the fetus such as cleft palate, missing fingers and limbs; problems with respiratory tract, cerebral anaemia, congenital heart disease, premature birth …
 
What to do when suffering from Pregnancy Urticaria and pruritus?
 
Some following simple ways will help pregnant mothers reduce itchiness:
• Soak in oatmeal or baking soda or green tea;
• Apply a cold compress;
• Apply aloe vera gel after bathing;
• Wear soft cotton clothing;
• Avoid using shower gel that has a strong odor or has a lot of harsh chemicals;
• Do not use deodorants;
• Keep personal hygiene, shower every day;
• Eat nutritious, balanced meals scientifically.
 
Pregnancy urticaria and pruritus will resolve when the mother gives birth or when she fully complies with the treatment guidelines of the doctor. Note: Do not use any kinds of medicine without the prescription of a doctor.
