Khẩn cấp
SIGNS AND CARE INSTRUCTION FOR A CHILDREN WITH WHOOPING COUGH
Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a contagious infection that can affect your child's lungs and airways. It's usually caused by a type of bacteria called bordetella pertussis and particularly serious in babies under six months of age.
Whooping cough symptoms
The incubation period (the time between initial infection and the onset of symptoms) for whooping cough is about 5 to 10 days, but symptoms might not appear for as long as three weeks, according to the CDCTrusted Source.
Early symptoms mimic the common cold and include a runny nose, cough, and fever.
Within two weeks, a dry and persistent cough may develop that makes breathing very difficult. Children often make a “whoop” sound when they try to take a breath after coughing spells, though this classic sound is less common in infants.
Take your child to the GP if:
- He has the symptoms of whooping cough listed above
- He has a cough that's lasted for more than three weeks
- His cough is particularly bad, or getting worse
How can I care for my child while he has whooping cough?
The following tips can help your child feel more comfortable while he has whooping cough:
- Let him get plenty of rest.
- Encourage him to drink regularly throughout the day.
- If your little one's symptoms are bothering him, offer the recommended dose of infant paracetamol or ibuprofen. Check the pack or ask your pharmacist if you're in any doubt about how much to give and when.
- Don't give your child over-the-counter cough medicines.
How can pertussis be prevented?
Vaccination is the best way to prevent pertussis. Vaccination against pertussis is part of the regularly recommended childhood vaccines.
Persons who have been vaccinated for pertussis may still get pertussis disease, but will generally have a milder illness.
