Khẩn cấp
SILENT SYMPTOMS OF ANEMIA THAT ARE EASY TO BE OVERLOOKED
Anemia is the condition in which you lack enough healthy red blood cells to carry sufficient oxygen to your body’s tissues. The symptoms of anemia vary according to the causes.
Some people are born with anemia or have inherited anemia which shortens the life of red blood cells. The most popular cause is deficiency of essential substances for the body to generate blood cells (such as iron, vitamin B12 or folate).
Symptoms of anemia:
For most people who have chronic anemia, it is not easy to identify symptoms. However, you may notice some such as:
- Fatigue
- Irritability
- Easy fatigue or loss of energy
- Rapid heartbeat, anxiety or shortness of breath
- Exhaustion most of the time
- Sudden dizziness or headache
- Pale skin
- Pitted and brittle nails
- Pica syndrome (an appetite for substances that are inedible such as clay, paper, products made of paper…)
Risk factors:
- Vegan diet can lead to shortage of iron, folate and vitamin B12
- Helminthiasis
- Menstruation causes the loss of red blood cells. Menorrhagia can worsen the condition.
- Pregnancy
- Stomach ulcer that affects the absorption of iron
- Malabsorption
- Chronic conditions such as kidney failure, liver failure, diabetes, cancer... can shorten the life of red blood cells or affect the production of blood cells.
- Family history: if your family has a history of an inherited anemia, you may be at risk of the condition (such as sickle cell anemia).
Make an appointment with your doctor if you have any symptoms or risk factors. At the American International Hospital (AIH), our internists and nutrition experts will tailor a treatment plan for you based on your specific conditions.
