THE IMPORTANCE OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY IN STROKE REHABILITATION

THE IMPORTANCE OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY IN STROKE REHABILITATION

08/07/2024

Up to 80% of post-stroke patients face sequelae with severe disabilities. Post-stroke sequelae are considered a multi-disability condition because there are many different types of impairments in a single stroke patient.

In the stroke sequelae, the most common sequelae are motor disorders such as paralysis, limited mobility, cognitive disorders, communication disorders, living activities, limitations in daily activities, and eating disorders…

Therefore, patients need to engage in rehabilitation and persistent exercise to minimize the impact of their medical condition, help improve their quality of life, and prevent the risk of disability.

The common methods of rehabilitation
  • Physical therapy: It is a rehabilitation intervention method that uses physical modalities: kinesiology and physical agents, helping to restore impaired functions, assist in pain relief, and improve mobility for patients.
  • Occupational therapy: It is a rehabilitation intervention through the patient’s activities of daily living (ADLs), helping the patient to be independent in daily activities.
  • Speech therapy: This is a method that includes assessment, diagnosis, and intervention techniques for patients with speech and language disorders, fluency issues in communication, dysphagia, and swallowing disorders after stroke… It helps patients communicate and swallow more effectively, allowing them to return to daily activities, continue working, and improve their quality of life.

► The role of post-stroke occupational therapy

Post-stroke occupational therapy is very important and should be carried out as soon as possible to help the patient:
  • Optimize the patient’s functional capacity and work ability.
  • Increase the independence of patients.
  • Improve quality of life
  • Promote the return to work, daily activities, and social integration.

Interventional occupational therapies for post-stroke patients at American International Hospital (AIH):
  • Practice gross motor skills and fine motor skills, guide the use of exercises in daily activities, and maintain, limit complications on the paralytic side (shoulder subluxation, muscle stiffness)…
  • Practice using a wheelchair & assistive device, shifting body, moving…
  • Guide for good posture to rest properly
  • Training in basic activities of daily living (BADLs) – dressing, bathing, grooming, toileting.
  • Training in advanced activities of daily living (AADLs) (require higher cognitive abilities, listening, writing, signing…)
  • Interventions to adjust the living environment, consulting on modifications and changes in building design/ surrounding environment to facilitate self-care for patients, such as renovating walkways, door widths, and the height of restrooms and kitchens…
  • Guidelines for caregivers of stroke patients.

At the American International Hospital (AIH), the Neurology Clinic is equipped with modern facilities and equipment that support the diagnosis, consultation, and specialized treatment of neurological disorders, as well as care and rehabilitation after a stroke.
