WORLD PATIENT SAFETY DAY 17 SEP 2023

WORLD PATIENT SAFETY DAY 17 SEP 2023

12/09/2023

Patient Safety is a health care discipline that emerged with the evolving complexity in health care systems and the resulting rise of patient harm in health care facilities. It aims to prevent and reduce risks, errors and harm that occured to patients during provision of health care. A cornerstone of discipline is continuous improving based on learning from errors and adverse events.

According to the World Health Organization, each year, 134 million adverse events occur in hospitals in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), due to unsafe care, resulting in 2.6 million deaths. Globally, as many as 4 in 10 patients are harmed in primary and outpatient health care. Up to 80% of harm is preventable. The most detrimental errors are related to diagnosis, prescription, and the use of medicines.

Recognizing that Patient Safety is a global health priority, the World Health Assembly (WHA) adopted a resolution on Patient Safety which endorsed the establishment of World Patient Safety Day to be observed annually by Member States on 17 September.

Response to WHO’s World Patient Safety Day on September 17, 2023, with the theme "Engaging patients for patient safety" and the slogan "Elevate the voice of patients!". American International Hospital (AIH) holds activities that educated and instructed to raise awareness among patients, families, and caregivers about patient safety, helping them become active partners in their health care – SAFETY STARTS WITH YOU!
