Babies are considered to be delayed walking when they are at 18 months old but have not steadily walked on their own. Babies with delayed walking worry many parents whether it is normal or not? The following reasons will explain to parents for better understanding of this condition:

  • Babies with genetically delayed walking: this is not due to any health problems at all, if parents were delayed in walking from childhood, their born babies could also be genetically delayed as parents.
  • Delayed walking caused by preterm birth: The development rate of premature babies will be slower than full-term ones in all respects, including walking ability, but it is not worried at all, as long as the baby develops well overall.
  • Delayed walking due to the child’s personalities: this  also determines his/her learning to walk. There are children who just like to lie down, sit in one place, or some who may be shy or afraid to walk because of fear of falling.
  • Delayed walking caused by some pathologies: May be related to musculoskeletal problems, cerebral palsy condition or other brain disorders or organ-related pathologies.

A baby who is slow to walk is not a concern when there are no signs of pathology. Parents can  observe the overall mobility of the child, if the child is slow to walk but can still hold on objects to stand up, know how to grasp objects skillfully, move tables and chairs, have language skills, perception,… parents should not worry too much, instead, they should encourage, help children to walk more confidently and limit excessive carry-on. At the same time, nutritional supplement is given with zinc, Lysine, chromium, selenium, vitamin B1... to support for stronger skeletal system under doctor consultation.

If after a period of training, encouragement, but the child’s mobility is still not progressive, parents should take him/her to visit doctor for timely examination and treatment.
